Rehderodendron microcarpum - East-Himalayan Snowbell Tree

East-Himalayan Snowbell Tree is a deciduous tree up to 10-15 m tall. Flowers are borne in leaf-axils or at nodes of previous year branchlets, in 10-15-flowered fascicles or panicles, 3 cm long, flower-stalk jointed 6-10 mm long, elongated upto 3 cm in fruits, whitish velvet-hairy. Flowers are white, 1-2 cm across, sweet scented; sepal cup obconical, 5-ribbed, 5-6 mm long; 5- toothed, sepals 1.0-1.5 mm long, teeth pink triangular. Flowers are bell-shaped, petals 5, overlapping, oblong to obovate, 1.5-2.0 × 0.3- 0.5 cm, shortly fused at base, tip blunt. Stamens are 10, in two rows, alternatively 5 long and 5 short; filaments flattened, 1.2-1.5 cm long, style elongated, slender, 1.4-1.7 cm long. Leaves are alternate, oblong-elliptic or sometime obovate, 10-20 × 5.0-8.5 cm, base rounded to broadly so, margin entire or sometime remotely minutely toothed, tip short pointed or tapering, hairless on both sides; lateral veins 7-12 pairs. Fruit is woody, dry, not splitting, cylindric, stalked, 3.5-6.5 × 1.5-2.0 cm, prominently 5-6-ribbed, smooth between ribs, mostly adnate to sepal-cup, persistent style conical, tip with persistent sepal-cup and style base forming a short rostrum, beaked. East-Himalayan Snowbell Tree is found in Arunachal Pradesh, China, Myanmar, at altitudes of 500-2500 m. Flowering: April-December.
